About
As an employed PMET, you have regular conversations with your manager on topics of utilisation, adoption, reporting, or fixing problems. But are these truly strategic conversations that can help you shape your career future? If not, you are creating a messaging void. You need a different kind of conversation –that kind that can help you build a shield against frequent work challenges like office politics, work-life imbalance or unrealistic work targets. In short, you need to take control of your own career future by shaping it. Recent career theories have backed this fact. Boundaryless career, for example, calls for us to build a robust network, knowledge bank and skills base that is transferable. A Protean career teaches us to drive our career choices through our values. Finally, shaping our career future calls for us to recognize that our career paths are following less of a linear upward trajectory but more of a "zig and zag", multidirectional career path where loyalty is based on continued thriving work opportunities. This seminar will teach us how to do just that.
Learning Outcome
• The overall objective of this workshop is to emphasise the importance of talking to your superiors about your career future and being engaged by feeling that we are moving forward in our development. • We will investigate the factors that can influence our own careers, the benefits associated with career development, and how to hold a proper career conversation. • We explore the challenges of shaping career futures, learn about the research behind career conversations and how to help ourselves find opportunities and formulate our next steps. • We will explore career theories that suggest to us to take ownership of a value-driven career. We introduce the 'career lattice', which helps us consider the variety of opportunities that may be available for our future. Finally, we will learn how to 'Job-Sculpt' to be more engaged in our present roles.
